Opening a Termite Mound

Issue 1

Northern Australia

I shove a crooked stick in the crust
of the driest looking mound,
stirring ancient dust that stings my eyes.
No dead thing rises from this tomb:
life itself comes pouring out
cool and damp in tiny white packets,
guarding its treasure with pincers and riddles,
life that is older than dinosaurs
but will still be new when we are gone.

Stuart Flynn

Stuart Flynn was born in Australia to Irish parents. Creativity is hugely important to him as he has been a jazz musician his entire life, and has been writing seriously for twenty years. He is inspired by the natural world, and his poetry reflects that. His poems have appeared in Cyphers and Abridged.  He currently lives in Dublin.
